I am so glad I moved out on my own. I’ve had family problems and don’t have to deal with that anymore now that I’m independent. I currently live off campus in the basement of a townhouse with 12 other people that’s near my post-secondary school. I go to university for theatre, so technically I’m not a “college”-kid but I think the term is so broadly used and more familiar, so I say that instead of “uni-kid”.

Here are some problems I’ve encountered while rooming with the people here…

Your roommate is singing and cooking lasagna at 1 in the morning

Your roommate smokes weed at night….

…so that explains your weird dreams.

The fridge is never big enough for the 4 of you to share

You’re spending an insane amount of money…especially on overpriced food

i love food more than i love people

You feel sorry for the people downstairs but you can’t help but make thumping noises when you’re doing tuck jumps.

You bought canned food but forgot to bring the can opener

Other than that, I’ve been having a blast with my roommate Wardah watching movies, talking about Pakistani culture(she’s from there), doing homework together, and of course, eating lots of food. I’ve been bringing her organic apples from my singing instructor who grows and gives them out to her students, sweets from coffee house events on campus, and Starbucks treats. 🙂 T

What were some of the hassles you encountered on campus/moving out for post-secondary?

  • I hateeee when I forget to bring the can opener. :[ I’m glad things are going better for you now that you’re living out of the house!! <3 I requested my roommate for college and we lived together for all 4 years (we'd known each other since the age of 11, so I figured we'd be fine). I still consider those to be some of the best years of my life, and I really miss em'!

    • Did you share the same room or have separate rooms but a shared kitchen?

      • For the first year, we had to stay in dorms and there wasn’t a kitchen, but for 2nd + 3rd year, we shared a studio apartment, and in the following year, we had separate rooms because we moved in with 2 other friends! :O

haha you’ll get used to the weird things college students do at night 🙂 and thats an impressive twist!!

  • Haha – I love tha part about singing and making lasagna at 1 am! I encountered some of the same problems when I studied abroad. I shared a house with 6 other people and we only had one fridge…go figure…

  • #collegekidproblems post is great! It’s so accurate! Have a good weekend!

  • LOVE this! I cannot wait to run into these problems when I go to college 😀
